I'm so excited you're here! This guide was created to help you feel confident, prepared, and stress-free leading up to your session.

Inside, you'll find everything from outfit inspiration and color palettes to makeup recommendations, session tips, posing guidance, and answers to some of my most frequently asked questions. My goal is to make your experience as easy and enjoyable as possible while helping you achieve the timeless, heartfelt images you see throughout my portfolio.

What to wear for your session

One of the most common questions I receive is, "What should we wear?" The good news is that you don't need perfectly matching outfits to create beautiful photos. My biggest recommendation is to choose outfits that coordinate rather than match, allowing everyone's personality to shine while still creating a cohesive look.

For my editing style and the natural outdoor locations I love to photograph, soft, earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully. Think creams, ivory, beige, sage green, dusty blue, rust, soft browns, muted florals, and other neutral colors. These tones create a timeless look and keep the focus on the connection between you and your loved ones.

A Few Tips:

  • Choose coordinating colors instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing.
  • Add texture when possible—linen, knits, lace, denim, and flowy fabrics photograph beautifully.
  • Avoid neon colors, large logos, busy patterns, and graphic designs that can distract from your images.
  • Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. If you're constantly adjusting your outfit, it will show in your photos.
  • For dresses and maternity sessions, flowy fabrics create beautiful movement and add a dreamy, whimsical feel.
  • Don't forget the details! Neutral shoes, simple accessories, and clean nails can make a difference.

Most Importantly...

Your session isn't about perfect outfits. It's about capturing your family, your love, and this season of life. If you're unsure about what to wear, I'm always happy to help coordinate outfits or review photos of options before your session. I want you to feel confident, comfortable, and excited when you arrive.

Need help deciding? Send me photos of your outfit options, and I'd be happy to help you put everything together!

Makeup Recommendations

The best makeup for photos is makeup that still feels like you. I always recommend enhancing your natural features rather than trying something completely different for your session.

A Few Tips:

  • Consider applying makeup slightly heavier than your everyday look, as cameras can naturally soften makeup in photographs.
  • Focus on even skin tone and light coverage that photographs naturally. Avoid products with heavy SPF or excessive shimmer, as they can create unwanted flashback or shine.
  • Neutral eyeshadows, soft lashes, and defined brows photograph beautifully and help your features stand out in images.
  • Choose a lip color that complements your outfit and skin tone. Soft pinks, mauves, nudes, and natural berry tones are timeless choices.
  • If you plan to self-tan, try it a few days before your session rather than the night before to ensure a natural, even finish.
  • Don't forget your nails! Neutral or well-maintained nails can make a difference in close-up images, especially during maternity, engagement, and family sessions.

Most importantly, I want you to feel comfortable and confident. If glam makeup is your thing, go for it! If you prefer a more natural look, that's beautiful too. The best photos happen when you feel like yourself.
